From Blue Hole to restored waters and water resilience
The foundation of the Aquatic BioGX Initiative is Blue Hole carbon sinks and the four working groups that support them. AQUA-RESTORE and WATER-RESILIENCE are concrete future goals reached by combining the working groups' results on top of that foundation. International collaboration, including with EU research and innovation frameworks, is part of the outlook.
Modular aquatic restoration technologies for biodiversity recovery
Turning the floating modules and assessment methods built for Blue Hole into a restoration package for degraded waters.
Improve water quality
Reduce nutrient loads and suppress harmful algal blooms.
Create habitat
Build places where native species and aquatic plants can live.
Recover biodiversity
Bring back fish, benthic organisms and aquatic plants.
Scientific assessment
Independent eDNA-based evaluation and long-term monitoring.
Implement and scale up
Package the work as user-friendly, reproducible technology.
The Blue Hole floating-module design, and the way leaked microalgae feed surrounding life, are combined with water-quality and habitat modules and applied to restoring water bodies.

Satellite-enabled adaptive water management
Extending the Blue Hole MRV backbone to whole watersheds — from observation to action.
Satellite monitoring
Track water conditions over wide areas at high frequency.
In-situ observation
Measure water quality, flow and weather in real time.
Data integration and forecasting
Forecast water quality and quantity with AI and simulation, and assess risk.
Adaptive water management
Optimise intake and wastewater treatment and support infrastructure operation.
Water resource conservation
Secure safe water and build climate-resilient watersheds.
The satellite × in-situ sensor × AI MRV backbone that verifies Blue Hole carbon removal is extended to watershed and coastal water management. Blue Hole N/P recovery becomes one of the adaptive interventions.
